After a decade of racing, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to China

From March 15th to 17th, the China Electric Vehicle Hundred Forum (2024) was grandly held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. ABB was invited to participate and showcased its latest Formula E racing simulator, allowing visitors to experience the thrill of electric racing and enter the exciting world of electric transportation.

ABB's customized Formula E driving simulator vividly recreates the full experience of driving an electric race car. From the realistic track interface to the professional driving posture, responsive equipment control, and lifelike visuals, it allows test drivers to experience the outstanding performance and powerful power of Formula E cars from all angles. At the event, over 300 spectators enthusiastically experienced the racing simulator under the guidance of professional racing technicians, and all expressed that it was more exciting and realistic than racing games.

From reality to virtuality, and back again.

From May 25th to 26th of this year, the long-awaited ABB FIA Formula E World Championship (FE Formula E), the world's top electric racing event, will return to China for the first time at the Shanghai International Circuit for an exciting two-round race.

Ten Years of Witness

In 2024, the China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum will mark its tenth anniversary. The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of electric vehicles in China and globally. China's new energy vehicle sales soared from 75,000 in 2014 to 9.5 million in 2023, accounting for over 60% of global production and sales.

From 2014 to 2024, the ABB FIA Formula E Championship also celebrated a remarkable decade, forging a close bond with China.

September 2014

The inaugural Formula E race kicked off at the Beijing Olympic Park, marking a green start.

October 2016

Formula E debuted in Hong Kong, with ABB providing on-site charging services.

January 2018

ABB became the title sponsor of the FIA Formula E Championship and provided leading technology.

September 2018

ABB Formula E unveiled its China strategy at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, officially entering its fifth season in China.

March 2019

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship showcased its high-speed competition in Hong Kong's Central District and Sanya's Haitang Bay.

January 2023

The third-generation racing car entered service in season nine, and ABB became the official charging partner of Formula E.

May 2024

Formula E will return to China, with 11 teams and 22 top drivers set to compete in Shanghai.

For a decade, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has brought exciting events to iconic city centers across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe, providing a high-profile platform to showcase and test cutting-edge technologies and rallying forces to accelerate the innovative development of electric vehicles.

Over the past decade, racing technology has evolved, with a new generation of lighter, faster, and more fuel-efficient cars taking to the track. ABB has worked closely with the FIA and the Formula E team to develop custom, compact, and safe charging equipment for the third-generation car, meeting the unique demands of the racing environment.

While showcasing the unique appeal of electric racing to the world, it also continuously explores and promotes leading e-mobility technologies, and raises awareness of energy transition and sustainable development.
